Obedience

Master Bankay speaks from his heart.

He does not quote from books or sutras.

He does not indulge in philosophical deliberations.

A priest lost his students to Master Bankay.

Angry and jealous, he went to challenge Master Bankay at a public teaching.

“Hey you, Zen Teacher…

He who is respected is obeyed. Can you make me obey you?”

“Please come up next to me so I can show you.”

The proud priest pushed his way to the front.

“Come to my left.”

The priest did so.

Master Bankay smiled.

“Better still, we can talk easier if you come over to my right.”

The priest moved over.

“Now you see, you obeyed me very well.

You are a very gentle person.

Please sit down and join us.”
